Shein Clothing

Shein's low prices come from several choices that reinforce one another: selling directly online, producing in response to demand, and working with a large network of manufacturers around Guangzhou. This page explains what is documented about each, and what it does and does not tell you about quality.

Direct Online Sales

Shein sells through its own app and website. A traditional retailer's price includes costs that a direct online seller avoids or reduces, such as store rent, store staff and several layers of wholesale and distribution. Direct selling does not make a product cheap by itself, but it takes some of those costs out of the price.

An On-Demand Model

Shein describes its on-demand business model as one that "strives to minimise wastage from the start". An on-demand approach generally means making smaller quantities first and reordering what sells, which reduces unsold stock, one of the largest hidden costs in fashion.

A Supplier Network Around Guangzhou

Shein works with third-party manufacturers, many of them in and around Guangzhou. Sixth Tone reported in 2021 that Panyu district is one of its main production hubs, with 300 to 400 core factories and over 1,000 smaller sub-tier suppliers, citing domestic media. Yahoo Finance reported in August 2024, citing Sky News, that Shein partners with some 6,000 manufacturers and was building a supply chain headquarters in Guangzhou's Zengcheng district. Counts differ by source and year.

Fabric, trim, printing and garment makers located close together shorten lead times, which is one reason clusters like this are attractive to buyers.

Scale and Supplier Pricing

Working with thousands of manufacturers gives a retailer room to negotiate. This is standard in wholesale: larger and more predictable orders usually earn better prices from suppliers and carriers.

What About Quality?

Price does not tell you the quality of a specific item. Shein sells products from many different suppliers, so quality varies. Read reviews with customer photos, check the fabric content and care label, and expect some inconsistency. For staples you want to last for years, compare against brands that publish more detail on materials and testing.

What This Means If You Source Products Yourself

Anyone building a similar business faces the same questions: how to find suppliers, test small batches, check quality and ship. Our Yiwu sourcing process page walks through six steps, from idea to delivery. A Yiwu sourcing agent can handle supplier verification, price negotiation, inspection and shipping, and our quality inspection service explains how checks before shipment work. You can also see where Shein warehouses are located and how shipping works.
